Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has reiterated the company’s ongoing dedication to single-player games, regardless of their size. This reaffirmation comes after both Xbox and PlayStation faced challenges with their live service ventures, with Sony especially reconsidering its strategy following the failure of Concord.

In a recent interview with XboxEra, which took place shortly after Xbox's Developer Direct event, Spencer expressed his satisfaction with the showcase, which featured exclusively single-player games. He also noted that Game Pass is an ideal platform for smaller titles like South of Midnight, which are more modest in scale compared to other major first-party releases.

Spencer emphasized that not every game concept is suited for the live service model, and forcing such a structure can undermine the creative intent. He said, “I didn’t want to see every game turn into some big service-based game just because it’s the trendy business model. Not every story is told that way.”

He highlighted that smaller teams, such as those at Double Fine and Compulsion, are crucial to Xbox’s approach.
